A Brazilian dance company is bringing a “triple bill” performance to the stage at The Lowry this spring.
São Paulo Dance Company will be coming to The Lowry from Tuesday March 12 until Wednesday 13.
São Paulo Dance Company likes to fuse classical ballet with Latin American dance.
The “sleek, sexy and highly technical” company of dancers aim to present a rich programme of work from three choreographers rooted in Latin American or Spanish culture.
Goyo Montero (resident choreographer with Carlos Acosta’s company Acosta Danza) explores the idea of collective identities in Anthem, an emotionally charged ensemble piece for 14 dancers.
Gnawa, by Spanish choreographer Nacho Duato draws on the Mediterranean colours and flavours of Valencia, powered by the hypnotic, ritualistic music of North Africa.
Brazilian choreographer Cassi Abranches’ colourful and flirtatious Agora provides an “exhilarating” finale. Exploring time and rhythm, she sculpts the movement of each dancer’s body with the percussive beats and bass grooves of Afro-Brazilian fusion.
The company’s 22 outstanding dancers aim to match “ferocious” contemporary technique with the warmth, rhythm and flair of Brazilian culture.
Since its founding by Brazil’s state government in 2008, São Paulo Dance Company has been under the leadership of its artistic director, Inês Bogéa.
Bogéa has built a classically-trained company which has produced over 100 dance works, almost 50 of them original commissions, and performed to more than 900,000 people in 18 different countries.
