After a 31 year wait, Roe Green Cricket Club won the Greater Manchester Cricket League and T20 Premier Competition last season, narrowly missing out on an impressive treble in the Derek Kay cup final.
After such an historic year Roe Green CC are now eyeing up going one further for the treble this summer.
Club captain Luke Norris spoke of the significance of their winning 2023 season.
“Last year was the first time since 1992 that we’d won something at first team level, so it was obviously a really successful season.
“As a club we’ve invested in ourselves, in terms of developments on grounds, updating training facilities and the reason for that is we’ve now grown to four senior teams.”
The team are based in Worsley and offer cricket to all ages with 13 junior teams, one ladies team and four men’s senior teams, but it was their first team that stole the headlines last year.
For the first time in the club’s history, the first XI won the double despite a shaky start to their season, losing two games on the trot.
In the Greater Manchester Cricket League (GMCL), the cricket is played in the 50 over format, taking a day to complete.
The 2024 season
Their first home game of the season takes place on Saturday April 27 against Clifton Cricket Club, a team just over the other side of the M60 to Roe Green.
They play a warm-up fixture away in Scarborough earlier in April then the first competitive game is away at Egerton CC, the scene of an heroic match-saving batting performance from Roe Green player Joe Davies in the previous season.
“Away to Egerton, when Joe Davies played his only game of the season, we were down and out chasing a score of 147 until [he] arrived at the crease to see us home scoring 48 not out.”
One of the biggest local competitions is the Lancashire knockout trophy, which is the best four teams in each league across the county.
Luke Norris said: “They all go into the Lancashire knockout trophy, and we’ve been drawn at home some time in May against Blackpool Cricket Club, so that will be a really big day at Roe Green.”
The confirmed date for this big day out for Roe Green CC vs Blackpool CC is Sunday May 19.
