A date has been set for the re-opening of the grade II listed Buile Hill Mansion which has been closed for more than 20 years.
A report from Salford City Council stated that the works on the building are to be completed by December 20, with spring 2025 marked as the target date for wedding bookings to begin.
The £7m renovation works began in November of last year with the aim of bringing the mansion on Eccles Old Road into a 21st century community hub. The community hub will include a wedding venue, registry office, café bar and a community meeting room..
The council is also planning external improvement works to the café building “as soon as finances allow.” This could include a new car park, a new walkway from the main entrance on Eccles Old Road, and improvements to the existing sensory garden.
The mansion was built between 1825 and 1827 by Sir Charles Barry, the architect who redesigned both the Houses of Parliament and Trafalgar Square. The mansion was used for military purposes during the First World War and Second World War and stored over 800,000 sandbags. It was caught in the blitz when it was struck with a direct hit in 1940 from the German Luftwaffe
Salford Mayor, Paul Dennett, previously stated: “I made a commitment to the city, our residents and communities at the last mayoral election to bring Buile Hill Mansion back into community use and it is fantastic news that the planning panel has now approved our ambitious and exciting plans for this much-loved historic asset in the heart of our city and in the jewel in the crown that is the city’s central park.
“This historic building will now house the city’s Registry Office so it is a fitting place for people to register births, marriages and deaths and provide a unique venue for weddings, civil partnerships, renewing vows and baby naming and citizenship ceremonies and associated celebrations.”
