A former Salford resident has been awarded the Young Person of the Year award at the ILoveMCRAwards ceremony.

Hannah Payton received the Young Person of the Year award at a ceremony in Manchester on November 23, due to her exceptional voluntary work at the Makants Greyhound Rescue.

Hannah enjoyed a glitzy evening with celebrities for company including Will Mellor and Gemma Atkinson, who she received her award from.

She said: “It felt amazing to win the award. Everybody cheered for me and congratulated me. I could not believe it! I was so happy walking up the red carpet, l could not stop laughing.”

The 26-year-old has been volunteering for the Makants Greyhound Rescue for over four years and counting, while her mother Jutta Payton walks the dogs. Hannah helps by cleaning the kennels, washing bowls and grooming the dogs when she can.

Hannah said: “My mum introduced me to Makants and I love it there. I have lots of fun with Siobhan and the other volunteers and I love the dogs.”

When Hannah found out she was nominated for the award she was initially “very happy and excited.”

Hannah and her mother Jutta lived in Swinton up until 2019, when they moved to Atherton, which allowed them to begin more hands-on volunteering with the Greyhound Rescue only a short distance away.

Makants Greyhound Rescue was founded by Siobhan Hopple and is based in Tyldesley, Greater Manchester.

The Rescue primarily rehomes retired racing greyhounds from all over the country but also helps find homes for greyhounds from individuals who can no longer provide the love and care they require.

On Hannah’s brilliant achievement, the organisation said: “We are absolutely delighted for Hannah to be recognised as ‘Young Person of the Year’ and send our heartfelt CONGRATULATIONS to her!

“Her glamorous evening is in stark contrast to Hannah’s duties at the kennels three mornings a week where she helps in the kennels with cleaning and washing up.”
