Around 22 Salford-based jobs are expected to become available in 2024 as part of plans to move more BBC News to the North.
However, some Salfordians have been quick to point out their lack of connection with the MediaCity area, suggesting that the expansion will not benefit local people.
One Salford resident commented: “I don’t think that the jobs will go to local people. The BBC will probably just move workers up from London and I doubt that there will be any extra coverage on Salford and the local area in the news.”
This disconnect was echoed by the stallholders at the set-to-close Eccles market.
As part of the BBC’s move to “deliver to all of its audiences” the City’s BBC News hub will be expanded as the company looks to deliver higher amounts of coverage away from London next year.
The BBC have highlighted that an “extended hour-long edition of the ‘BBC News at One’ will relocate to Salford, creating a daytime TV powerhouse in the City.”
This will be the first time a daily BBC national news bulletin will be broadcast outside London.
The plans to expand are a continuation of the widespread change the Media City area has undergone since its inception. With an ever-changing skyline, the area has become synonymous with opportunity and investment in the city.
The BBC’s expansion will come 13 years after the corporation initially moved into Media City and 17 years after construction originally began in the location.
