The chair of the Red Devils Supporter’s Trust says the club would “lose its connection with the city” if forced to leave its home at the Salford Community Stadium.
The rugby league club’s lease at the ground, formerly known as the AJ Bell Stadium, expires this week with the Red Devils, the council and part-owners Peel yet to find a solution to issue.
Shirley Bradshaw of the Salford RLFC Supporter’s Trust expressed deep concern about the possibility of the club not being able to play within Salford or move to Salford City’s Peninsula Stadium.
She said: “This weekend is like a D-day for a club with the lease being up, hopefully they can come to a short-term arrangement.
“The fans are just hoping that the right thing think happens and hopefully it can be sorted.
“We are Salford and we want to stay in Salford.”
Salford City Council intends to buy the stadium and lease it to the Red Devils and fellow tenant Sale Sharks rugby union team. But Shirley says the council has not moved quickly enough.
She says: “The process is dragging along at a snail’s pace.”
Shirley is also concerned at the current overall financial situation with the club, following the sale of star players Brodie Croft and Andy Ackers to Leeds Rhinos.
“As much as it caused fans to be annoyed it was either that or the club went under”.
“Until the lease is signed to say we can play at the community stadium the club cannot be financially stable”.
Shirley and the Supporters Trust are encouraging fans to stay behind the club.
“I am 100 percent behind the club and I will back them to the hilt.”
And despite the concern Shirley is confident Salford Red Devils will survive.
“The fanbase and club have been through similar situations, such as relegation, umpteen times.”
