Irlam FC’s Macron Cup tie against Runcorn Town produced a memorable moment as goalkeeper Lee White scored to seal a 4-2 win for the Salford-based side.
Those in attendance were left stunned as, with minutes left on the clock, White’s long ball forward bounced over the head of the opposition goalkeeper netting the player his maiden first-team goal 12 years after signing for the club.
When asked to reflect on the goal, White noted that it felt “a bit surreal as keepers don’t score often and aren’t expected to score.”
The unlikely scorer highlighted the element of good fortune: “Luck took part as well, I went to play our striker in and overhit it, luckily the ball bounced over the keeper’s head and rolled in.”

White added: “I’ve played for the first team since 2011 and have never scored, I played for the reserves before and scored in a friendly once before that but that’s it!”
White is positive that the side can sustain their good form throughout the season, identifying progression in the FA Vase as a target for the club.
“We’ve got a good group of lads and our team spirit is second to none, we’re in decent form at the moment but there is still a long way to go. We are hoping to push for the promotion spots and have a good go in the FA Vase this season,” White said.
John Main will be hoping that luck continues to be on the side of his team as the club looks to mount a run in the league and across multiple cup competitions.
For this victory, Irlam has been rewarded with a home tie against Prestwich Heys or Wythenshawe FC in the third round of the Macron Cup.
