Elliot Watt feeling “back to where I was last season” ahead of Gillingham trip

Salford City travel to Gillingham on Saturday as they look to put their midweek FA Cup penalty shoot-out defeat against Peterborough behind them.

Neil Wood’s side are sitting in 15th place in Sky Bet League Two, six points off Morecambe in the Play-Off positions, ahead of Saturday’s clash at MEMS Priestfield Stadium.

Meanwhile Gillingham’s early season form has waned as the Kent side have faced defeat in four of their last five games.

Speaking to the media before Saturday’s encounter, Elliot Watt described being “back to myself” after an appendix injury that ruled him out of much of the early-season action.

The midfielder, who was named the North West Football Awards League Two Player of the Year last week, had the chance to put his side through to the FA Cup second round on Tuesday before hitting the post in the shootout.

The Ammies have picked up double the number of wins on the road this season than at the Peninsula stadium, with Salford’s win at Doncaster their fourth away victory of the campaign.

Watt said: “We enjoy going away from home, it’s that siege mentality where everybody is against us… we go away teams have to come and press us, it suits our game more.”

He added: “It’s another tough place to go in Gillingham… but we back ourselves 100% to go there and get a result.”
