‘Moving in Salford’ is a new get fit campaign aimed at bringing back fitness levels amongst the Salford population to pre-pandemic levels.
The campaign has been launched by Salford City Council and will run till 2027.
The goal is to go back to a pre-pandemic active population in Salford where people were much more active than they are now post-pandemic.
Activity levels in Salford have dropped recently, however, before Covid-19, the activity in adults increased yearly with 9 per cent of adults doing 30 mins of physical activity per week.
Activity in young people is a high focus with that group being one of the least likely to get involved in physical activity.
By 2027 the campaign aims for 74.9 per cent of adults and 63.9 per cent of young people in Salford to be more active.
There will be opportunities for people from a range of different ethnicities, cultures and ages coming together to increase both mental and physical heath.
The campaign will prioritise the most inactive people and encourage them to be active, especially focusing on: lower socio-economic groups, different minority groups and religious communities, those with long-term health conditions, woman and girls, disabled people, and the elderly.
The ‘Moving in Salford’ movement further aims to help extend the quality of life, improving social and community development whilst also playing a role in environmental sustainability.
Key priorities of the campaign include:
- Ensure physical activity is aligned with key city strategies
- To be able to raise awareness for the different opportunities available or physical activity
- To encourage more walking and cycling
- To have a Salford standard of an active employer
The Salford Health and Wellbeing Board will take charge of overseeing and implementing the framework to allow for a healthier and happier Salford community.
The framework for the new scheme can be found on the council website here.
