‘Neapolitan Pizza from Naples – via Worsley’ – that’s the promise made by the Salford-owned Leopard Pie pizza outlet, who set up at Kargo MKT on Salford Quays over the Summer.
The food market opened recently in Central Bay, on Salford Quays, hosting over a dozen different food vendors spanning different cultures across the globe. For Leopard Pie it’s a second outlet after it home in Worsley, where it has made a name for itself serving up neapolitan-style pizzas and their famous honey-butter rings.
Tony Elliott, Director of Leopard Pie, spoke about the importance of bringing these culinary identities together in Salford at Kargo MKT.
He said: “If someone is looking to broaden their culinary tastebuds, and kind of try something different, this is definitely the place to come.
“One of the good things we have here, that we do here as a vendor is we have a good understanding amongst vendors of sharing food with each other.
“I personally have been able to try a lot of different cuisines from different cultures that I may have gone for another option, if you will.
The business, which promises “0% leopards; 100% amazing”, says it ferments its dough for three days, and offers pizza by the slice so visitors to Kargo MKT can enjoy other cuisines.
When asked about the run that Leopard Pie has had at Kargo MKT so far, Elliott commented: “This past weekend, you couldn’t get in. The impact of word of mouth travelling fast, the business is growing quickly.”
The location is also close to local amenities like the Old Trafford football grounds, home to one of the biggest football teams in the city.
“When they had the first match, it was elbow to elbow, you couldn’t even move around.” Tony added.
When asked how he thinks Kargo MKT would serve the community in Salford, Tony Elliott said: “I don’t see how it could not benefit this area.”
And the name? ‘Leopard spotting’ describes the markings on a pizza made by the oven’s flames, while the doughy discs are also known as ‘pies’.
• Kargo MKT is open in Central Bay, and is accessible through the Quays Outlet. It serves food until 9pm on Monday – Wednesday, 10pm on Thursday – Saturday and 9:30pm on Sunday.
