Salford City manager Neil Wood expressed his frustration at his side’s perfomance against Accrington Stanley, losing 2-1 at home.

First half goals from Shaun Whalley and Josh Andrews put Stanley firmly in front in a game which they dominated for large spells of the match.

A late resurgence, including a 88th-minute goal from the spot by Ryan Watson, gave some optimism to the 2,000 Ammies fans inside the Peninsula Stadium.

But Salford could not repeat similar late heroics seen in recent months, condemning them to their second loss of the season and to 10th place in League Two.

Manager Wood spoke after the game, saying “I thought we were poor for 25 minutes.

“We gifted two goals away from our point of view, again following on from last week, which is disappointing because we spoke a lot about that during the week.

“I just thought we played a lot of backward passes in the first half, and just bringing pressure onto ourselves when we didn’t need to do that.

“I thought we were too negative, we didn’t see forward passes quick enough and probably weren’t brave enough to play forwards in the first half.”

Wood also took positives from his side’s performance towards the end of the match.

“If we start the game the way we finish it, then we’ll be okay. I thought we finished it very well, we were much better, but we can’t keep doing that for the first 25 minutes.

Ammies captain Alex Cairns drew similar conclusions as his manager.

“We gave them their two goals, which is frustrating for us as a defensive unit and team in general.

“We can’t gifting teams goals, especially at home. We need to create this into a bit of a fortress and at the minute it’s not so.

“The good thing is that there are things there that we can improve on and where we need to improve and that’s what we’re doing.”

Salford return to action in just a few days, welcoming Championship side Leeds United to Moor Lane on Tuesday night in the Carabao Cup.
