Worsley Golf Green has seen fires and damage to the course again, after more than 20 acts of vandalism in two years.
The club posted a picture of the course on Facebook this morning (Friday 4 August), which shows tyre marks across the course. The club also reported fire and property damage across the green.
Robert Holland, General Manager of the club claims that, over the past few years, teenagers have thrown unsolicited parties on the green, and up to 80 pins and rakes have been stolen, with some ending up in the on-site pond. During a nice week, he claims that there can be up to four instances of damage to the course.
Robert said: “The staff and groundsmen feel absolutely demoralised after all the hard work they do. It’s hours and hours and hours of work.
“We don’t harm anybody, we’re not a snobbish club or anything. We’re welcoming to everybody.”
Despite a full report of the incident being submitted to GMP, the manger claims he “must have filed out 20” police reports last year alone.
He continued: “Although I’ve lodged all these reports, what can they do? The course has a public footpath running through it, so we can’t put up gates or anything. We’re going to try CCTV, but how effective that will be, I don’t know.
“We approached a group of teenagers last year and asked what they were doing. They just said ‘I’m sorry but there’s nowhere else to go.’ I felt a bit sorry for them, we’re surrounded by poverty around the course.”
The post by the club read: “The annual let’s destroy our local golf course has started.
“Why, I’m not sure. We don’t harm anyone and believe we serve a purpose to the community.
“This was the 6th green this morning. 40 Flags and rakes just thrown away every Summer. Anything that can be set fire to is burnt. Every year it gets worse. It’s saddening and just creates so much work and cost.”
