An event discussing the role Salford played in the development of vegetarianism in the 1800s is coming to the area.
The Salford’s Victorian Hippies Talk with local historian Derek Antrobus is set to consider how a religious sect, and Reverend William Cowherd, in Victorian Salford was instrumental in the creation of the Vegetarian Society, and the wider national political culture.
Coming to Castlefield Viaduct on June 14, the talk focusses on how ideals associated with 1960’s hippie movements, were actually a century old by the time of the movement.
The talk is led by local historian Derek Antrobus, whose 42 years in public service included roles as Salford City Council’s lead on planning and sustainability and membership of the Greater Manchester Green City Board.
Following this, Director of Manchester-based social enterprise, Sow the City’s Kieron McGlasson will discuss the historic response to inequalities in society and the challenging parallels with 21st century Greater Manchester today.
Tickets cost £5 and can be purchased through the National Trust website.
