An ex-addict from Salford has praised the work of a local dentist after receiving treatments which gave him the confidence to retrain as a counsellor.

Landlord Gavin Reid, 51, thanked Spinningfield’s Rüh Dental after they performed extensive dental work to repair ten years of drug and alcohol abuse in his mouth.

Feeling “ugly” and living with “no hope” due to the severity of his teeth’s condition, Gavin felt isolated and alone. He said: “I had struggled with my relationship with drugs and alcohol for the best part of 10 years. I wasn’t taking good care of myself at all, and this really showed in my mouth.

Gavin has struggled with his confidence after neglecting his teeth for more than 10 years

“I felt ugly. I never smiled and would dart out of the way every time I saw someone with a camera. I used to be such a positive, happy person but my teeth made me feel incredibly self-conscious.”

Having been sober for three and a half years, a family member then recommended Rüh Dental to Gavin, in the hopes of repairing his confidence. He said: “I hadn’t been to the dentist in about five years. I didn’t bother exploring any options as I genuinely didn’t think there was any hope left for me.”

Gavin was cared for by Dr Arshad, who, during his first consultation, promised the landlord he would “do his absolute best to get him the smile he deserved”.

A combination of dental aligners, porcelain veneers, crowns and bridges were fixed into Gavin’s mouth, leaving him “in tears” on first sight of the work.

He said: “As soon as I looked in the mirror, I was so overcome with emotion. It was mentally life changing for me.”

Since completing his treatment, Gavin has now made the “life-changing” step and retrained as an in-person counsellor. He explained: “I feel as though I finally have a purpose. I’m able to properly look after my teeth, and I know just how much it has improved my self-confidence and self-esteem.

“[Ruh Dental were with me] every step of the way, making you feel important and cared for. I would never go to any other dentist now.”
