The Lowry footbridge could be set for a £683,000 makeover as the council vote on a new painting scheme for the Quays landmark.
The Salford City Council Procurement Board will vote on Wednesday 26th April to approve the awarding of a contract for works on repainting the Lowry footbridge, with the project described as a “top priority”.
Twenty weeks of work could start in May to repaint the footbridge, according to documents published by Salford City Council.
The footbridge, which was constructed in 2000, is located within MediaCityUK and provides access across the Manchester ship canal from the Lowry theatre and Quayside shopping outlet.
Work will be undertaken on the paintwork and lights of the footbridge after “routine inspections” found the condition of the bridge to be “poor”.
The Procurement Board report that the works would be a “cost-effective” way to extend the bridge’s structure and that early intervention would “reduce the extent and cost of these works.”
Works on the Lowry Footbridge will cost an estimated £683,375.90 with funding available through the Highways Capital Programme.
There is notable rust, deterioration and corrosion across the bridge which is also used as a boarding point for Manchester riverside cruises.
The potential repainting scheme would be the first major refurbishment scheme to be undertaken on the landmark.
