A Salford recipient of the British Citizen Award is completing a charity walk after a “massive” heart attack left his grandad unable to take part.

Ethan Evans is aiming to walk 71,000 steps in 710 minutes to raise £7,100 for the domestic abuse charity, Salford Survivors Project, in honour of his grandad’s 71st birthday.

Ethan’s grandfather, Ed, was originally meant to complete the challenge in honour of his mother, but a recent heart attack has meant Ethan has stepped in to support the cause.

Ed said: “By rights I shouldn’t be here, I had a massive heart attack last year, the cardiologist thought I was going to die.

“My mother was a victim of domestic violence, my father was quite a nasty person. We’ve all grown up with that, that’s why Salford Survivors is a charity that’s quite close to the family.

“When my mother was 87, she’s actually still around, 99 now, she did a challenge for Salford Survivor’s and she raised over £6,000.”

The Salford Survivor project is a charity established to support anyone suffering or being affected by domestic abuse. It aims to provide a listening ear and support people to make positive changes whilst raising awareness.

Ethan, who became the youngest recipient of the British Citizen Award at 14, has raised around £35,000 for various charities since the age of 9.

He has completed fundraisers for the homeless in Manchester, Broughton House, Mind In Salford and Manchester Children’s Hospital as well as many more.

Ethan, aged 20, said: “[The challenge] is something that my Grandad wanted to do but with him being 71 he’s not in the space to do that but I am so why not do it.

“I started raising money when I was in Primary school. The reason that came about was due to stuff that’s happened in my life. I was involved in a hit and run at an early age and just wanted to start giving back to others.”
