Fitton Dance Company is opening a new dance and performing arts school in Walkden on February 11.

The company is run and was made by Nikki Fitton, a teacher at Flixton Academy Of Performing Arts for 29 years. She decided to continue teaching after Flixton Academy shut down and make her own place to keep bringing fun sessions to young people.

There are classes for everyone, which include: ballet, tap, contemporary, acrobatics, street dance as well as drama and singing, some led by Nikki and other teachers at the company.

Taking part in physical activities are a great outlet for children and teenagers as a way to improve their mental health and this is a fun and exciting way to do so.

All young people can join from ages two and a half to sixteen years old, as the company is just starting but there is a possibility for adult classes in the future.

The sessions run once a week for each age group, they can have a trial and then decide if they want to commit to the classes. There are no drop-in sessions as Nikki said: “It needs to be consistent, which is better for the child to be consistent and not miss out.”

However young people can decide if they want to take a variety of the classes available and come in during other days of the week.

In her 29 year experience as a teacher, Nikki said: “In that time we’ve helped lots of children and teenagers get through hard times. If they’re having a hard time at school they come to class where their dance friends support them and their teachers support them.

“We do play a little bit of a social worker role to help them out and they come out happy from their dance classes.”
