A production documenting the trial of one of the UK’s last women to be executed for a crime is coming to The Lowry.

The news of the production comes as today (Monday 9th January) marks the 100 year anniversary of the execution of 28-year-old Edith Thompson, who was put on trial for her husband’s murder in what was known as one of the century’s most infamous trials.

Using the transcripts from Edith Thompson’s trial, combined with dramatised scenes, Edith will re- examine the case of one of the last women to be executed in the UK, whose guilty verdict has long been criticised but never overturned.

Written by Harriet Madeley (The Other Tchaikovsky) directed by Madelaine Moore (Old Vic 12) and starring Ivy Corbin (The Great Gatsby), Edith assesses the impact that misogyny towards childless and adulterous women had on the jury’s fast verdict.

Edith is supported by Arts Council England, the John Thaw Foundation and Unity Theatre Trust. The script was developed in collaboration with women at HMP Styal and National Prison Radio, the first national radio station for prisoners.

Edith premieres at The Lowry in Salford on 1st-4th February, 2022. A live stream is available on 3rd February.
