The public have been urged to teach children the dangers of icy water after reports that 15 schoolchildren were seen skating on The Dam, Swinton.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) Swinton, Pendlebury and East Salford shared the plea on Facebook on Saturday (17 December), stating that members of the public had reported seeing the children skating across The Dam in Queensway, Swinton.

The plea comes just weeks after four boys died after falling in a frozen lake in Solihull, Birmingham.

The post read: “We reach out to family’s to ensure that their children are spoken with to maintain their safety when they are without a responsible adult. Such behaviour could not only put their own lives in danger but also others should anyone look to help.

“We reiterate, do not go onto frozen bodies of water as you are risking your life.”
