Today marks the 107th anniversary of a Private who fell into Irlam Locks and drowned on duty.
Private John Madden (53), who served with the 6th Reserve Battalion of the Manchester Regiment, was on duty guarding the Locks on a foggy night.
Private Madden is believed to have fallen in the Locks, after his body was believed to have been found drowned towards Hollins Green on 16th December 1915.
Private Madden’s coffin was provided by the Military Authorities in Manchester, before being buried at Hollinfare Cemetery in Warrington in plot North 723.
Today, his anniversary had been shared across Facebook by the ‘Irlam. Cadishead and Rixton with Glazebrook’ group as a mark of remembrance.
