Salford has many hidden green routes which showcases its natural beauty and as we go into the Autumnal months it’s a perfect time to rediscover them.
The Black Harry Bridge circular walk, soon to be called the Swinton Greenway, is an easy two mile walk which lasts nearly an hour. The circular route starts at the Three Sisters, Swinton passing through Eccles College, the Swinton Park Golf Club, Monton Sports Club and Ellesmere Park.
Another easy circular route is the Peel Park ring which lasts about two hours. The route begins at Chapel Street then follows the river Irwell which has pedestrian pathways on either side of the river. Passing through the river Irwell Riverside walkway to reach the Kersal Wetlands and loop back through to Peel Park. The walk showcases the Salford Museum and Art Gallery and the Autumnal Peel Park.
For a more difficult walk lasting nearly two hours, the walk from Ellesmere Park to RHS Bridgewater showcases the beautiful Bridgewater canal and the stunning Packet House.
There are many walking groups in Salford which are aimed to bring people together and get outdoors. The Bolton Ramblers go on walks throughout the week to places like the Ogden Reservoir in Rochdale and the Burnt Edge in Horwich. The group is based in Bolton but is accessible to everyone by joining their Facebook group. There is also the Salford u3a hiking group which has programmes of led walks for retired or semi-retired people, meeting on alternating Mondays.
There are many physical and mental benefits to walking which are heavily promoted by Salford City Council. In a statement, they said: “Moving more in your daily life can help you to feel happier and improve your health. Salford boasts a range of parks and open spaces along with other opportunities for walking and generally getting out and about in our great city.”
