Following a stellar season for Salford Red Devils, England’s Marc Sneyd received the player of the match award as England demolished Greece in their final pool match of the Rugby League World Cup.
It was a historic day for Rugby League as England’s emphatic 94-4 win, is now their biggest ever victory. It was also the first time a woman refereed a men’s world cup match, and the 18,760 strong attendance at Bramall Lane is the largest ever crowd to watch Rugby League in Sheffield.
Salford Red Devils‘ Marc Sneyd was one of England’s star performers in the match, and was a deserved recipient of the player of the match award. The impressive scrum-half converted 13 of England’s 17 tries and got a try of his own.
Another decisive play from Sneyd was when he threaded a pinpoint kick through to winger Ryan Hall who gathered the ball and scored.
Salford’s Andy Ackers also contributed to England’s record breaking score-line as he bagged a try.
Other notable performances for manager Shaun Wane’s side included that of Dom Young who went over the line to score, not just a hat-trick but four tries.
Hull KR’s Ryan Hall also caused the Greece defence all kinds of problems which earned him two tries. Perhaps on another day he could have had a hat-trick too.
England’s journey through the world cup pool stages has secured the host nation a place in the quarter finals. England’s quarter final opponents have not yet been decided, but it is highly likely it will be Papua New Guinea.
The quarter final fixture will take place at Wigan’s DW Stadium, on Saturday 5th November. The England women’s side kick off their second game of the tournament at the same stadium on the same day, so fans can treat themselves to an exciting double header. Tickets can be found here.
