The Hive Wellbeing Hub in Swinton is opening a singing group for Salford residents with the aim of boosting mental health.

The new group at the Hive is for everyone and runs on Friday mornings from 10:00 – 11:00.

Group Teacher, Tanya Hayman, graduated in Performing Arts and Teaching from the University of Salford in 2005. She believes singing can be hugely benifficial to mental health.

Miss Hayman said: “I have suffered with mental health problems over the years, so I know how important singing and drama can be to bring people together, so they don’t feel alone.”

Tanya won the ‘Heart of Salford’ award in 2009 for her voluntary work in the community, having also hosted singing groups at the Salford Women’s Centre and walking groups in the spring.

Miss Hayman explained: “It is very rewarding to see a group grow and become more confident, not just with the singing but also socially within the group.

“It goes beyond just singing, it’s about finding a group of people you can bond with.”

The hour-long sessions allow students to sing a number of different songs.

She added: “In the class we have the music on and sing along to different songs and words.

“The students also choose songs for the next week that they would like to try as a new group can take a while to build and grow.”

Group singing is thought to provide a sense of connection, belonging and community.
