Salford Red Devils Women’s team have been promoted to the Super League following their remarkable first season as a club.
The ‘special’ team won 19 of their 21 competitive fixtures last season and picked up two trophies, the League Cup and the League Leaders Shield.
The Red Devils will play in Group 2 of the Betfred Women’s Super League against the likes of the Bradford Bulls and the Castleford Tigers.
Manager, Marcelle Lock, said: “Being offered the opportunity of promotion into Super League Group 2 after just one competitive season as a team reflects the hard work and commitment every single person in this group has displayed over the last 12 months.
“They have continued to demonstrate both on and off the field their calibre and drive for success and I could not be prouder – they really are a special bunch.”
Women’s Head Coach, Chris Bates, spoke about the impact the promotion will have on the club and women’s rugby in Salford.
He said: “If you’re a 12, 13, 14-year-old girl then you have a pathway that the foundation has set-up that links straight to first team.”
The winner of the Grand Final is typically offered the chance of promotion and, although the Oulton Raidettes beat Salford 33-14 in the Championship Grand Final, they opted to stay in the Championship giving Salford the opportunity to be promoted.
