The community project is offering the service in order to encourage positive self esteem in men.
The Shed’s Project Co-Ordinator, Terry George said: “What we’re trying to do with the haircuts is give people more self-esteem within themselves.
“There are no services for men anyway or for men who suffer with anxiety or depression. This is a safe haven for people to come in.”
A project set up by Salford Foundation, The Shed also offers emotional wellbeing, counselling support, job support and life skills courses.
George continued: “The idea behind it was that there is no services for men. What’s happening is that, after the lockdown, we noticed there was a lot of depression and anxiety. This mentally put people in a bad place. The haircuts offer a bit of self-esteem.”
Supporting those in probationary services, as well as Greater Manchester Mental Health Services, the project supported over 75 men from Salford and Trafford, last year.
Relying entirely on community fund-raising, the free haircuts are on an as-and-when basis.
