The inaugural women’s nines competition was held in Warrington was a huge success for the sport as it was a brilliant opportunity for the sport to gain a new audience with the exciting format of nines rugby.

One of the key people involved in organising the competition is St Helens Women’s captain Jodie Cunningham who was delighted with how the first round of the tournament went.

“It was a lot of work to pull together and organise it in the women’s calendar.

“But all the teams bought into it and it was a chance to celebrate women’s rugby league.”

It was a chance for new teams such the Salford Red Devils it was their first opportunity for the girls to challenge themselves against the best teams around such as St Helens and Leeds Rhinos.

“It was a chance for teams from the lower competitions to realise they can match it against the top teams which gives players loads of confidence.”

The turn out for the festival was good and the number of young girls who she hopes will be inspired was so important.

“Seeing the amount of spectators and how many young girls particularly was amazing for us.”

The finals of the tournament will be taking place at Salfords AJ Bell Stadium on Sunday 24th July, with the top five teams plus a wildcard from the opening festival competing.

With nines rugby being a faster paced version of rugby league spectators can be expected to see some good rugby and highlight the quality in the women’s game.
