‘Harassment’ continues at Salford uni campus despite move to improve safety

Theft, harassment and vandalism remain issues for students living on the University of Salford campus, despite progress being made.

Two months ago, following a number of complaints, students started a petition for more active security around the university and accommodation.

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness of crimes and instigate a response from the university and accommodation providers.

In response, the University of Salford and Campus Living Villages (CLV) said the number of security patrols across campus would be increased.

Some students acknowledged the measures taken by the university regarding security, saying that they feel ‘safer’.

One who asked not to be named said: “The security presence has definitely increased on Peel Park, every day I see two to three guards in High-Vis walking around, it definitely makes me feel safer at night.” .

In previous months, students raised concerns about security in the car parks of the CLV. The university has posted on its Instagram page that new shutters will be used at the entrances to both car parks.

Salford University student, Samantha Malt said there has been some progress on the issue: “They are now fixing the barriers in the car park so now people have to scan their key cards, but that will take a few weeks to get them working again.”

Despite the new drive towards a safer campus, some residents of the Peel Park campus are still facing harassment from hooded moped riders. One student claimed that while walking to their car after lectures and holding their car keys in their hand, a moped rider approached from behind and slapped the hand holding the keys in an attempt to steal them.

A University of Salford spokesperson said: “Ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our university community is our top priority and we are committed to providing a safe space to study, live and work with a number of safety measures across all three of our campuses.

‘We would ask that our residents remain vigilant and report any unusual behaviour to a member of the village team or university security immediately.”
