To celebrate International Women’s Day, the Tomorrow building in MediaCityUK hosted a mini market of female led businesses.
The four-hour event in MediaCityUK, included a range of local, women owned businesses based in and around Salford.
The wide mix of companies involved gin from The Four Sisters, tasty brownies from The AiryFairy Cake Company, homemade candles from Albion Candle Company, dog treats and storybooks from Little Nell and beauty products and awareness from Be Trans Aware.
Jo Thorne, the community coordinator for Tomorrow, decided to run the mini market in the newly furbished space to promote women owned businesses.
She said: “Anything that promotes small businesses, local businesses and female-led businesses is really important.
“On a day like today, International Women’s Day, we should celebrate the women that we have.”
The market was busy with people keen to support the businesses, and allowed consumers to have an incite into women-led companies based just on their doorsteps.
Sophia Huddlestone, owner of the Albion Candle Company, works in one of the agencies within the Tomorrow building.
She said: “To have this going on locally to me and to be able to support businesses and support women in businesses is such a nice to thing to do.”
“It shows that women are independent and can do this kind of thing.
Today I definitely feel proud in what I do, it isn’t often that you can stop and appreciate it.”
With Manchester becoming one of the UK’s largest, most well-connected cities, there are many business-women who have a huge part in the growth of the city.
Sophia added: “I think to come and do this in celebration of women owned businesses makes me really proud of what I do and all the business that I have worked with and been in touch with through doing it.”
Hayley Robinson is the co-owner of Four Sisters Distillery. Hayley and her three sisters started up the business in the footsteps of their brothers, who are owners of Seven Brothers Brewery.
She expressed that running a business, as women, can be hard due to the juggle of family life and a business alongside. However, the women at the mini market today proved their dedication and efforts, no matter the hurdles.
“We are a business ran by four women in a field that is mainly ran by men,” Hayley explained.
The born and bread Salford business is looking to expand further, out of the North West.
“We love Salford, we are really passionate about Salford and it is great to see Salford growing and improving as time goes on.”
On International Women’s Day, it is also important to recognise and include the trans community.
CEO of Be Trans Aware and beauty therapist, Sam Marshall, said: “It is important to remember that there are trans people out there, who should definitely be included on International Women’s Day.
Be Trans Aware began by teaching Trans Awareness to businesses within the beauty industry and other industries.
Sam explained: “We believe there is a big gap in everyone’s knowledge about gender inclusivity and gender identity.”
Herself and Kerry, owner of Hair Has No Gender, run Be Trans Aware alongside their own businesses, but for it to take off!
Jo Thorne and her team at Tomorrow are not shy of pops-up in their building. They are always interested in hearing from small businesses and bringing people together post-covid.
“Hopefully we will be able to more stuff like this in the future!” Jo expressed.
