In an effort to reduce Salford’s high smoking rate, the annual No Smoking Day will return in March this year.

According to a 2019 report, 21% of adults in Salford are smokers compared to the average across Greater Manchester of 14.7%.

The ‘Make Smoking History Campaign’ which is part of Salford City Council has been running for 16 years, and takes place on Wednesday 9th March this year.

The services are open to anyone within Salford who is older than 16, which is run as part of the health improvement service.

The figures from the 2019 report also suggest a link between poor mental health and smokers, with 40% of people with long term mental health conditions being smokers.

According to the council’s website it can take smokers up to 30 attempts for someone to quit for good.

They said:” Smoking damages the lungs and weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight infections. That means if you get COVID-19 or flu you’re more at risk of complications.

“Just 72 hours without smoking means your breathing will get easier”

Those that need guidance on how to quit should call the Spirit of Salford helpline on 0800 952 1000.

Residents can also refer themselves through a self-referral form.
