Salford shoppers have slammed the government over its Christmas party scandal as the city’s football boss Gary Neville urged disenchanted voters to march on Downing Street.
After a video surfaced of Boris Johnson’s staff joking about a Christmas party in December’s lockdown last year, Neville took to Twitter urging his followers to “stand up for Truth and Integrity in out democracy.”
Throughout the peak of lockdown last winter, parliament had multiple meetups, including a Christmas party on December 18.
The alleged gathering took place 24 hours before the Prime Minister announced those in England could not see their loved ones at Christmas time.
One Salford resident said: ““I think he is an absolute hypocrite and I think he has made a mockery of every person that has stuck to any sort of rules over the last two years. I think he’s a disgrace.”
Another said they are “unfortunately not surprised.”
Yesterday, Parliament announced new Covid-19 restrictions. ‘Plan-B’ involves the reintroduction of masks indoors and Covid passports required at large events.
Gary Neville posted a video on Twitter yesterday claiming the announcement is a “distraction tactic”.
He also said: “Now is the time to get this guy [Boris Johnson] out of Number 10 and start bringing some standards back into politics.”
However Councillor Robin Garrido from City of Salford Conservatives defended the Prime Minister.
“It’s annoying. It was twelve months ago, and it is distracting us away from the new variant,” he said.
“There has been too much emphasis put on it and we should concentrate on the new variant.”
Boris Johnson’s adviser, Allegra Stratton, resigned less than 20 hours after the video emerged.
Cllr Garrido does not think that Mr Johnson should resign.
“He was probably unaware as Downing Street is big,” he said.
