Salford City crash out of the Emirates FA Cup after a disappointing 2-0 loss to National League side Chesterfield.
A stunning strike from Liam Manderville gave the Spireites the lead in the 28th minute with a late 86th minute attempt from Jim Kellermann putting the final nail in the coffin for the Ammies FA Cup hopes.
Salford were not without chances of their own, however, having nine shots on target and 65% of the possession overall but were still unable to convert.
Chesterfield started the first half well, but it was the Ammies who saw the better of the chances. A Josh Morris free kick was palmed back out into danger by Scott Loach and the Spireites had to scramble it clear.
Even when the home side went a goal down, through Mandeville’s screamer, the chances still came for Salford, Matty Lund drove through the middle and had a pop at goal, but it was easily saved again by Loach.
The Ammies came out for the second half fired up and were almost level within minutes. A low driven ball fired across the box was inches away from being tapped in at the back post by a fully stretched Ash Eastham.
Chesterfield then grew back into the game, with their energy in the midfield deeming too much for the Ammies to handle.
Gary Bowyer did all he could to find a way back into the game, making a triple substitution in the 78th minute which led to late dominance from Salford. However, the visitors were the ones to score again, with a Kellerman strike squeezing past Tom King four minutes before full-time to secure the Spireites name in the third round of the draw.
🗣 “On reflection it’s probably a bit like we were at the beginning of the season where we’ve created chances, we’ve had balls flashed across the box, but we’ve not been clinical enough.”

Gary Bowyer’s post match thoughts
Speaking after the full time whistle, manager Gary Bowyer said: “Simply we didn’t put our chances away I think their goalie made one or two saves in the first half, and in the second half made another good save from Jordan Turnbull.
“Similar to the early parts of the season, we’ve created chances today there is no doubt about that, but we just haven’t been clinical enough.
“We conceded a wonder strike from their lad, which you have to take your hat off and applaud and then we get done with a second one which is soft from our point of view.
“Ultimately and realistically are a league two club going to win the FA cup, I wouldn’t have thought so. Our priority is the league, and we can go back to that now on the Wednesday.
“We will analyse this game and go through it with the players and then get ready for Barrow, going into this game we were six unbeaten, picking up seven out of nine in a week. So, it is a case of getting back on track to that, but we have to do more than we have probably done today.”
