Whilst on maternity leave, Salford mum-of-3 Pagan Jones had the idea to raise money within her community for local causes.
On December 19th she plans to complete a 6-mile walk from Swinton to Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital for Francis House Children’s Hospice.
Francis House Children’s Hospice supports people with respite, home care, sibling support, end-of-life care, and bereavement support.
The hospice provides high levels of clinical care to children and families of children with life-limiting and life-threatening diseases.
The hospice is not government-funded and needs £4.7 million in charitable donations each year to provide long-term support to families. Fundraisers like Pagan’s are examples of how they receive funding.
Pagan first came in contact with the hospice 9 years ago, “My nephew, was in the hospice, and he was supported for a while, that’s why we want to do this and give our support. “The money we raise gives so many people great opportunities.”
Within her community, Pagan and her friends do multiple fundraisers to raise money for various charities, including Macmillan coffee mornings and small fundraisers for friends and families.
“There are a group of 5 of us all doing things to help publicise fundraisers, on social media and in stores. Soon we will have people out in stores with buckets to collect donations.”
The inspiration to do this walk came from her neighbourhood “There are quite a few mums who want to go out and get walking around the community, so we decided to come together with our children and use this opportunity to help raise money and get out together.”
When asked what will motivate her on the long walk, Pagan replied “Being around other mums and having people to talk to, but also knowing what we’re doing and what we will be raising money for.”
The walk which will take them around 3 and half hours to complete will be easy and fun to complete with young children, Pagan adds that they are trying to get everyone to dress up as Mrs Clause or Santa to help boost the morale and spread extra Christmas cheer as they complete the walk.
Intending to make at least £100, Pagan is also doing a Christmas gift donation to collect presents and toys for the children who currently reside at the hospice.
To those donating to the fundraiser Pagan sends the message, “Francis Hospice isn’t supported by the government, and they have no help, it’s all run on donation. These donations help children with end-of-life support and their families. They offer great support for siblings, the money raised gives so many people great opportunities.”
