Salford City Council is to consult on whether to end a protection order that prevents anti-social behaviour – including open-water swimming – around Salford Quays.
The Quays are currently under a Public Space Protection Order, however this expires in 2022.
Salford City Council said: “This ASB predominantly occurs alongside periods of good weather and is having a detrimental effect on the quality of life of those within the community.”
However, residents have been critical of the order, a resident of the Quays said “I don’t think it’s ideal, [for] people who like outdoor swimming, I know it releases a lot of endorphins and its really good for your mental health to go swimming”
If the decision is made to continue the order, it would prohibit any unauthorized swimming, jumping from any bridge, removing, or displacing any lifesaving equipment expect in the case of an emergency and depositing or throwing into the water any animal or larger objecting including wheelie bins.
Failure to comply with the order can result in a summary conviction and a fine of up to £1,000.
The consultation period will run up to 17th January 2022.
