Co-op Academy Walkden

Staff and students at Co-op Academy Walkden were asked to wear odd socks last week as part of the school’s campaign to raise awareness for anti-bullying week.

This is the third year that the school has run an Anti-Bullying Week awareness campaign in conjunction with the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s Anti-Bullying Week Campaign.

The resources for the week were based around the Anti-Bullying Alliance’s theme, ‘One Kind Word’.

The theme was chosen as: “Kindness is more important today than it has ever been.

“The isolation of the last year has underlined how little acts of consideration can break down barriers and brighten the lives of the people around us.

“This is one of the reasons that ‘One Kind Word’ has been chosen as the theme of Anti-Bullying Week.”

Activities included an assembly for each year group to introduce the theme and ‘One Kind Word’ postcards, which were filled in by students during form and delivered to their intended recipients.

The community was also asked to nominate ‘Walkden Anti-Bullying Heroes’- a student or member of staff who has stood up to bullying.

Staff have also shared their odd socks on social media.

These activities aimed to show Co-op Academy Walkden students that they need the strength to stand up to bullying and that it is ok to care for others.

Principal Matt Hacker praised the response of those involved, saying: “I am proud that our students and staff work together throughout the year to tackle bullying and promote inclusion for all members of the community.

“We use Anti-Bullying Week to raise awareness of this and the support available, and further promote kindness in the community.

“We have had lots of kind words written and nominations for our Anti-Bullying Pioneers too.

“It’s been great to see our staff and students being ‘themselves always’ and wearing their odd socks too!

“Well done to everyone who got involved.”
