A former nightclub manager and Salford resident has called for more prosecutions for people who spike drinkers on nights out.
Ashlea Furness-Grimshaw expressed her concerns in light of a campaign to boycott clubs and bars. On Wednesday The ‘Manchester Night In’ will encourage people not to go to venues to raise awareness of drink spikings and sexual harassment.
She said: “We shouldn’t have to walk home in pairs, making sure we’ve got a friend with us when we go to the toilet, not speaking to strangers in clubs and bars it shouldn’t be dangerous.”
“I think until more prosecutions are done for things like this, I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference.”
Although spiking is not just exclusive to students the Instagram page @girlsnightinmanc have said their reason behind choosing Wednesday the 27th is due to it being a big student night where many of the incidences happen.
Student groups across the nation have seen their timelines saturated with spiking reports, however, fears have grown ever more as there are now reports of spikings via needle.
This new method is an even bigger concern with the risk of blood contamination.
The National Police Chiefs’ Council (NPCC) said there have been 198 cases, 24 of which have been administrated by a needle in the months of September and October.
However, with a few days left of October and the Halloween weekend rapidly approaching this is expected to increase, and timelines saturated with spiking reports are set to remain prominent.
Spiking Package:
Student and regular Clubber Lauren Dalboth claims she was spiked along with all her friends: “We’ve gone every week for a while we feel safe. We know quite a few of the bartenders.”
“And essentially, long story short, we got some drinks from the bar.
“And about half an hour later, I was very visibly unwell, couldn’t really walk couldn’t really talk properly, couldn’t really see.
“In terms of feeling safe, no, I don’t feel safe at all.”
Dalboth along with many other students claim they do not feel safe.
“I’m personally not going out until I see some change.”
“I think that especially with the increased reports of people being injected, you know you can do everything that you possibly can to prevent your drink being spiked, but you can’t do everything you can and with possibly injections.”
