Following his call-up, Angel Gomes has praised his godfather and former Manchester United player, Nani. He said: “His influence has been massive from when I was younger at United. He was someone I grew up idolising.
“At the time, I didn’t have an impression of a footballer. He was basically the first footballer I knew personally and, with me, he was amazing and humble and normal and let me know footballers are normal people at the end of the day.
“I remember the first time I went to his house. Being a young lad growing up in Salford, you don’t really go to mansions, drive down those kind of streets and see all the big houses. I was kind of confused to where I was going and when I turned up and he was there it was surreal.”
The U21s kick off their latest round of fixtures on Thursday October 7, when they face Slovenia in Euro 2023 qualifiers.
