Indian variant

Yesterday saw 17 new Covid-19 cases in Salford as the Indian variant spreads in Bolton and Blackburn.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson has refused to rule out the possibility of local lockdowns following the planned removal of nationwide restrictions on June 21 and it is feared the whole of Greater Manchester – including Salford – could be included.

Bolton and Blackburn have seen recent spikes and added 153 and 37 new confirmed cases yesterday, respectively.

It is not yet known if any of the Salford cases are the Indian variant, but as Bolton borders Salford many will be anxious to get their vaccine.

Salford City Council is waiting for the go-ahead from the government to start vaccinating lower vulnerability groups such as those under 40.

This appears to be in contrast to Bolton where thousands were queuing after Councillor Andy Morgan invited people to get vaccinated as 4,000 vaccinations had to be used on the day, tweeting “the team will find a reason to vaccinate you”.
