Salford is set to benefit from key BBC departments and staffing moving up north in a “top-to-bottom” transformation.

All 22,000 BBC employees have been briefed that entire departments and staffing will branch out from London across the UK, including major changes to Salford’s MediaCityUK.

A 13-page document reveals the BBC’s changes, with big plans to move bases out of London and across the country to the cities of Birmingham, Glasgow, Cardiff, Leeds, and Salford.

MediaCityUK will become a permanent home for BBC Radio 3, and a large part of 6 Music, in an effort to ensure 50% of network radio and music stations are located outside of London by 2028.

The move will also see Morning Live, hosted by Kym Marsh and Gethin Jones, to instead be filmed in Salford. Additionally, BBC Radio 4’s Today programme business updates will too come from MediaCityUK.

Exciting plans will see a whole new version of BBC One been tailored for North West, Yorkshire and North East audiences- alongside a new long-running soap-style drama series being produced in the North of England.

BBC Director general Tim Davie has said: “Our mission must be to deliver for the whole of the UK and ensure every household gets value from the BBC.”

These plans will get us closer to audiences, create jobs and investment, and develop and nurture new talent.

MP Julian Knight has, however, raised his concerns that the move should not follow in its previous “costly” footsteps when originally moving to Salford, which saw £233 million being spent on a MediaCityUK move.

Davie, appointed as the BBC’s new director general in June 2020, has said a change for the BBC has never been “more relevant, important or necessary”, with a “radical shift” needed to ensure value for money.
