Manchester United’s U18’s were Manchester derby day victors of sorts as they beat Salford City’s U18’s last night.
The FA Youth Cup tie, that took place at the Peninsula Stadium, finished 2-0 to the Red Devils.
Goals from Daniel Gore and Charlie McNeil in the first and second halves respectively sealed the result for the visitors.
It is the second time Manchester United’s academy have visited Moor Lane this season, the first finishing 6-0 to United against The Ammies first team in the Papa John’s Trophy.
The game started looking balanced in the early stages with both sides struggling to deal with the difficult pitch conditions.
United took the lead after a sublime Hughes’ first-time cross found Gore at the back post in the 37th minute.
Salford tried to rally back and struck the post from a corner just before half-time but United clung on to their lead going into the break.
After swapping wings moments before, Garnacho produced a moment of quality, throwing a handful of step-overs but only managing to force a corner.
Just as the game was losing its tempo McNeil plucked a moment of individual brilliance, stepping in off the left-wing and finishing from a tight angle to double the Red Devil’s lead.
United continued to look comfortable as they saw the game out, creating another chance through Garnacho.
United progress to the next round of the competition where they’ll meet the winner between Liverpool and Sutton United who play on Tuesday 16th March.
