Salford Survivor Project is appealing to the local community to help raise funds after their charity shop has been forced to close during Lockdown.
The charity helps men, women and children who are suffering from domestic abuse by finding them refuge, essentials and long-term support.
The shop (located on Liverpool Road, Eccles) only opened in August last year and usually raises vital money for the project as well as working as a base for clients to come for meetings and legal advice.
During Lockdown, the charity has reported a 400% increase in the volume of calls to their phone – in service, with many people trapped in potentially life-threatening situations.
With the UK’s intermittent Lockdowns making it difficult for the business to source a steady income for rent, the volunteers at the project are urging the public to get involved and raise money.
Last year, the charity’s overall spending reached over £24,000, making that little over £2,000 to help support the most vulnerable in our society.
During the first Lockdown, Forever Manchester and Salford CVS helped raise vital money for the project with its huge spike in calls.
The charity posted a plea for support on Facebook and within hours have has hundreds of pounds donated from residents all over the Salford area.
Jane Gregory, CEO, and Founder of the project expressed her concerns over the level of service she can provide without funds being raised. She said: “It was ridiculous, the amount of people we have been dealing with in comparison to last year.
“How can you give someone a full service if you haven’t got the resources to do it? There’s a different crisis every day.”
Gregory is pleading for 20 people to donate as little as £5 a week to help towards the rent of her shop and to provide essential services, such as the phoneline.
She also thanked the Salford community for their overwhelming support so far. She said: “It’s amazing to see people doing really kind things, especially at a time when we as a nation are at our lowest.
“Lockdown has helped create a network of people. It’s brought our communities back together.”
