The Poets’ Union at the University of Salford is set to raise money for an international LGBTQ+ charity with a Christmas showcase set for December 20th.
Despite the Covid-19 pandemic The society formed earlier this year and has been holding meetings remotely ever since.
On starting the society committee member Isabella Manning said: “We noticed that there weren’t any creative writing societies so we thought it’d be nice to have a place where other students felt like they could have a space to be creative and feel like they’re not being judged.
“It’s been hard to run the society remotely but we’ve managed and we’re excited for when we can finally meet in-person.”
The University of Salford Poets’ Union are ending their first semester off with a festive showcase of poetry open to the public.
The showcase will see 7 poets from the society performing their own original poetry competing for first place and runner-up.
Judges for the competition include poet & University of Salford lecturer Emeka Efe Osaji and the union’s co-chairperson Anthony Haughey.
Miss Manning said: “We really wanted to celebrate the talent of all our members.
“A lot of them joined the society with no experience of writing poetry but when they read out their poems to us they were actually really good.
“We wanted to get our members used to performing because we feel that everyone has potential.”
This is the first event The Poets’ Union is putting on raising money for Rainbow Railroad in the process.
Rainbow Railroad is an LGBTQ+ charity that helps members of the LGBTQ+ community escape violence and persecution in their home countries.
Committee member Miss Manning said: “We have a few LGBTQ+ members so we’re very passionate about what charities like Rainbow Railroad do.”
