“Our office was completely filled” – Bridgewater School collects donations for Salford Loaves and Fishes and Mission Christmas

A school in Worsley has sent off donations to a local charity which supports homeless and vulnerable adults. 

Bridgewater School asked parents to donate non-perishable food items which were today sent off to Salford Loaves and Fishes. The charity will then distribute the donations to those who are in most need.

Caroline Saunders, Marketing and Development Manager at Bridgewater School spoke about the generosity of the school community.

She said: “Towards Christmas time, you’re very aware that the vulnerable and people in need in our area are even more so at this time of year.

“We asked if parents were able to contribute non-perishable food items which went out today to Salford Loaves and Fishes. The response from within our school community has been amazing so we’re very grateful.

“We do a lot for various charities both within the local area as well as nationally and abroad. It’s really important for us that the students learn to look outside themselves and community is a really big part of that.”

In total, the school collected 40kg of rice & pasta, 50 boxes of cereal, 285 tins & jars, 75 boxes of biscuits and 23 boxes of tea & coffee.

Saunders continued: “We’re very thankful. We’re quite a small school and the collection was solely within the senior school department, so it was an enormous amount that families donated and was really generous.”

The school would usually hold an annual harvest collection in autumn for Salford Loaves and Fishes but have been unable to amid Coronavirus restrictions. The school instead organised a virtual service for the pupils and asked parents to donate directly to the appeal through text.

Yesterday, the school also sent off donations to Hits Radio’s campaign Mission Christmas – Cash for Kids which provides Christmas presents for children living in poverty.

Saunders added: “Oh my goodness, I can’t tell you. We had a minibus full of new gifts for children and young people which we delivered to their headquarters in Stockport. Our office was completely filled with items for babies and toddlers right up to hair straighteners, aftershave and things for teenagers as well.

“We’re part of the community as much as anybody else, so you have to do your bit.”
