A Salford student and two Salford University graduates have been chosen from thousands of applicants to host their own BBC Radio One Christmas shows.
Presenter and performer Victoria Jane, a graduate in journalism, has been successful in getting her show on 1Xtra this year on Saturday 26th December from 7-9 pm.
Not only is she talented in the journalism industry but she also writes and produces her own music in her spare time.
She said: “I wanted to do it because I love radio but I also love music, I love being an artist. A lot of people said that you can’t do both, but I have shown that you can. I think it is important to show people that you can do what you want to do and don’t let people tell you that you can’t.
“It was so hard not to tell anyone. When I was successful I wanted to tell the world but I couldn’t, it was so surreal.
“I have put together an amazing show so I am so excited to showcase a lot of merging and upcoming artists and playing some of the best songs of the year with my predictions for the year ahead. I am really excited.”
Another Salford University graduate, who was involved with the student station Shock Radio, has also been successful. Vicky Hawkesworth presents at Durham On Air and Bolton FM and has now got a place presenting on Radio One on Monday 28th and Tuesday 29th from 10 am-2 pm.
She said: “It was such an incredible feeling when they got in contact and said that I had two shows to do, it was such an incredible feeling especially in lockdown when the days can be so samey and dull and to get that call on a grey Monday afternoon. It just felt amazing, there was a lot of squealing and jumping up and down and wanting to tell everyone but not being able to.
“It was so nice to know after all the work I’ve put in, that I am on the right track and people like what I am doing.”
Current Salford University student Ellen Macleod, who studies TV and Radio at MediaCityUK where she manages student station Utter Radio, was over the moon when she got picked for her show on Boxing Day from 6-8 am on Radio One.
She said: “The reason I applied is that it was on last year and I was adamant that they would not listen to my demo and as it turns out someone I knew actually got the gig and that kicked me into action and made me apply.
“I still don’t believe that I am successful I guess. I am still sure that the head of BBC R1 is going to call me and say this is all a joke. It feels crazy, I have dreamt of being on Radio 1 for the last 10 years.
“The planning of the show is going pretty well, I had my first meeting yesterday and it is going to be pre-recorded. It is the newest show on the line up in the week of Christmas presenters. It is a playlist of really happy and upbeat songs to make everyone feel good.
