Salford-born sportswoman Emma Brown has been nominated for Deaf Sports Personality of The Year.

Brown was raised in Wardley and began playing football at around 14 years old.

She heard about trials to play for Manchester United when their foundation ran events at her school.

Brown was selected to play for Manchester United until she reached the under 18s team.

It was at Manchester United, she was told about the England Deaf Team by their coach.

She has been involved with football ever since, however, is now playing for Kent United Futsal Club.

Futsal is similar to football, but it is played inside, on a hard court with only 5 players per team.

Brown has achieved 4 bronze medals across both sports and the Deatlympics.

The Sports Personality of the year award is a massive event for all deaf sportspeople.

It is a bi-annual event that showcases the achievements of deaf athletes.

Emma Brown said: “Deaf sport does not get a lot of coverage or funding, so it’s nice that the awards gives recognition for the achievements as well as hopefully inspiring deaf people”.

She is one of six nominees for the awards.

When asked about her nomination, she said:  “I am shocked I didn’t expect to be nominated, especially when you look at past winners and their achievements.

“I’m very lucky to have competed at major international events and been given the chance to travel doing what I love.

“Sports keeps me both physically and mentally fit, has given me the chance to meet lots of people from all walks of life. I’m honoured to be nominated.
