Richie Wellens could write his name in the Ammies history books after less than a month in charge of his new club this weekend with a win over League Two pace-setters Newport County.
A win in South Wales on Saturday would put Salford City into the hat for the FA Cup 3rd Round, reaching a landmark for the club who have never got past the 2nd Round of the competition.
Wellens faces a tough task in order to secure Salford’s place in the next round, with opponents Newport County, managed by Michael Flynn, currently sitting at the top of the League Two table, remaining unbeaten at home in the league.

Flynn’s side boast an impressive record in cup competitions, reaching the 4th round of the League Cup this season, bowing out on penalties to Premier League Newcastle United. Last season the Welsh club reached the 3rd round but were outclassed away to Millwall.
Newport’s best cup run came in the 2018/19 campaign when they progressed to the 5th round, going out to eventual winners Manchester City.
Salford’s opponents come into this fixture having won three of their last six games, including their 2-1 first Round triumph over Leyton Orient.
The Ammies beat National League Hartlepool United 2-0 after extra time and will fancy their chances of progression after back to back victories in the league this week.
Wellens, who is without Darron Gibson and James Wilson, will be keeping an eye on Newport’s top scorer Tristan Abrahams who has seven goals in all competitions this season, netting four times in four league cup games..
Salford’s last meeting with Newport was certainly a memorable one as the Ammies beat the Welsh side in a penalty shoot-out to book their place at Wembley for the Football League Trophy final which is to be played in April next year.
The game kicks off at 1pm on Saturday and is available for viewing here for £10. Once again Wellens’ men will be looking to make Salford history at the expense of The Exiles this weekend.
