Yesterday, in an address to Parliament, Prime Minister Boris Johnston confirmed that the national lockdown is ending on December 2nd.
The Prime Minister revealed that once the lockdown has ended, England will return to the three-tier system, this time much tougher.
In the new system nurseries, schools, colleges and universities will again remain open.
Gyms and personal care can also reopen in all tiers.
Weddings and collective worship can again resume. However, this is subjected to social contact rules.
In outdoor spaces, the rule of six will apply.
What’s does the tier system now look this time around?
Tier 1: Medium Alert
- Rule of six applies for meeting indoors or outdoors.
- Pubs and restaurants last orders at 10pm and close by 11pm.
- Everyone who can work from home should do so.
- Minimum travel is encouraged.
- Personal care is allowed, for example hairdressing and gyms can open.
- Public can attend indoor and outdoor performances and shows. However, they must operate at 50% capacity, or either 4,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors.
- Attendance at spectator sports and business events can resume inside and outside. Must operate at 50% capacity, or either 4,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors.
Tier 2: High Alert
- No mixing of households indoors apart from social bubbles.
- Rule of six applies outdoors.
- Pubs and bars must close, unless they can operate as a restaurant. They must close at 11pm.
- Alcohol can only be sold with a substantial meal.
- Work at home if you can message still applies.
- Personal care is allowed, for example hairdressing and gyms can open.
- Public can attend indoor and outdoor performances and shows. However, they must operate at lower than 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors.
- Attendance at spectator sports and business events can resume inside and outside. Must operate at lower than 50% capacity, or either 2,000 people outdoors or 1,000 people indoors.
Tier 3: Very High Alert
- No social mixing indoors or outdoors in private gardens, expect for support bubbles.
- Rule of six applies when meeting in outdoor public spaces.
- Pubs, restaurants and cafes must close, but can operate as a takeaway or delivery service.
- Accommodation services must close, expect for limited exceptions.
- Indoor entertainment venues must close.
- Personal care is allowed, for example hairdressing and gyms can open. Although, gyms cannot hold gym classes.
- Organised outdoor sports can continue, but high-risk contact activity must not take place.
- Advised in travelling in and out of the area.
The Prime Minister will announce on Thursday 26th November what tiers is most appropriate for the areas, depending on the rate of infection and hospital admissions.
The Government has confirmed that they will formally review the situation every 14 days.
The system will remain in place until early spring next year.
A poll conducted on Salford Now has found that most people of the community believe that Greater Manchester will be placed in tier 3 restrictions.

One resident believes that tier 3 is destine for Greater Manchester.
He has said: “We live in die-hard Labour voter territory here, so probably tier 3 regardless of how bad the pandemic is here.”
Another resident believes that tier 3 restrictions would be bad for local business here in Salford.
She says: “It is detrimental for local businesses and the Government are not putting enough in place to help people who are really struggling this time, who are struggling financially and emotionally.”
There is a concern across some Salford residents that the Christmas relaxation will be damaging and result in harsh restrictions again being reintroduced.
“If we have the freedom over Christmas then that possibly could result in another lockdown in January which is worrying” one resident has said.
But for some Salford residents they believe that restrictions and sacrifices made, should continue.
One social media user has said: “Maybe this year we could do small family Christmas celebrations as I would happily give up Christmas to safe lives.”
