A group of spirited Salford Red Devils fans – partnered with their friends and family – completed a 12-mile walk from the AJ Bell Stadium to Warrington, raising around £1,500 for charity.
The group of 30, as it was done before the rule of six came into place, braved the four-hour walk down the A57 from Salford to the Halliwell Jones Stadium in support of St Ann’s Hospice and the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Walkers included James Hoskison from Reddish, a big Red Devils fan whose father died from cancer in 2018 and friend Andrew Wilding, from Walkden – whose father also died a year later having been in St Ann’s care for around 13 years.
Others joined who had lost family to, or been affected, by both cancer and Motor Neurone Disease.
Mr Hoskison said: “One chap did it, he’s got one leg! He’s got a prosthetic leg. The most he’s ever done is six miles – since he lost his leg and he did double that that day. He really did well.
“The majority of us all finished together. There were a few who wanted to get it over and done with and they were back a bit quicker than everybody else, but the majority all walked at the same pace to get this lad home as well.”
It was originally planned for Easter Saturday in April when Warrington were set to host Salford at their end destination but due to Covid-19, it was pushed back to September.
“We were hoping to see what we could do”, he continued. We were hoping to get a lot more people on it originally with it being a game day I think a lot of people would have followed us then obviously all watched the game together as well.
“We had good support,” Hoskison added.
“It was nice to catch up with people. Some people I’ve not seen for four or five months and getting behind us,” he said.
“Everyone followed all the guidelines, did what they should do and a good day was had.”
Following the walk, they were greeted with socially in Warrington with socially distanced pints, brews and well-deserved food by Adam at St Benedict’s Social Club.
“We needed something at the end of it, definitely. I definitely did,” he joked.
The group plan on doing another walk next year to continue their support to the charities.
