An urgent appeal has been launched to collect presents for Salford’s under-privileged children in a bid to make sure the COVID-19 crisis does not ruin Christmas.
The Salford Survivor Project is asking people to donate new toys and toiletries to help support families who can’t afford to buy gifts.
Chief Executive of the Peel Green based charity, Jane Gregory, says due to the pandemic some parents will not be able to give as much as they usually do.
She said: “We’ve got people crying down the phone to us on a daily basis because they’ve got no money to buy their children a present.
“Normally every year we do a Christmas appeal and last year we gave presents to 177 children and we’ve provided Christmas dinners to 40 families.”
Ms. Gregory added she does not believe they will be able to raise as much money as they did for the previous years.
She continued: “Children will be without the magic in Christmas if not enough people can help.
“I don’t even want to think about it. The gift that we give them might be the only gift they get.
“We took 400 people to Winter Wonderland in London last year, we can’t do that this year.”
The charity have recently benefited from a £400 donation from a Salford family who have raffled their house and car.
To make a donation, you can donate directly to the Christmas appeal bank account, using the following details: Reference: XMAS, Account: 35613460, Sort Code: 30-90-89.
