Die-hard Salford Red Devils fans have launched a petition pleading for the chance to watch their side in Challenge Cup action at Wembley – after waiting 51 years to win a place in the final.
Their team face Leeds Rhinos on October 17 but, due to Covid-19 restrictions, supporters will be unable to attend the game which generations have dreamed of for over five decades,
A petition was started by Red Devils fan Ryan Wilkinson who believes that the crowd ban at this stage of the pandemic is unnecessary and unfair.
On the petition’s page he states: “Fans who have dreamt of a Wembley appearance for 51 years in Salford’s case are unable to attend the game.
“This leaves a huge amount of die-hard Salford fans, most of whom are in their 60, 70 & 80s extremely disappointed that they may miss their last opportunity to see their club play on the hallowed Wembley turf.
“This is devastating for our supporters and we believe they should have the chance to attend the game.”
Wilkinson asked the Government to note that a Rugby League fixture in France allowed spectators in recently.
He posted: “Just over the channel, the French government have recently eased restrictions which allowed for 5,000 fans to attend a recent Super League game, Catalan Dragons v Wigan Warriors.
“There were no Covid-19 related repercussions from the game.”
This comes just as Boris Johnson announced today at the virtual Conservative party conference that by next year’s conference, members will be “face-to-face and cheek by jowl”.
Please sign and share our petition far and wide to allow supporters to attend @TheChallengeCup final on Saturday 17th October 2020. @SalfordDevils @RhinosFaithful @leedsrhinos #Salford #BBCRL #Salford #RedArmy @SRDFaithful @SuperLeague https://t.co/rT3Vm8DBxL
