Perhaps no-one will be as pleased with Saturday’s 0-0 draw with Forest Green Rovers than Salford City right-back, Tylor Golden.
The 20-year-old former Wigan youngster was thrown into the starting XI by Ammies manager, Graham Alexander and looked assured as his side took a point at the Peninsula Stadium.
Ipswich-born Golden joined Salford in the summer following his release from the Latics and was delighted to have made his league debut.
Golden said: “I’m ecstatic, I’m really, really happy! I loved every minute of it and I came off the pitch with a big smile on my face.”
Salford’s third fixture of the SkyBet League Two campaign proved challenging against a strong Rovers side that, together with the Ammies, had the strongest away record of last season.
Golden was part of a busy back line and whilst friends and family had to settle with watching back home, he was not fazed by the thought of some illustrious names being present to see him make his league debut.
In the stands were part-owners of Salford City and members of the Class of ‘92, including former Manchester United captain, Gary Neville, who amassed 602 appearances for The Reds and 85 caps for England at right-back, the same position that Golden plays.
“Just the fact they’re here supporting us, says a million words. It gives everyone confidence; when we look up in the stands, we’re glad to see them,” Golden added.
Graham Alexander made two changes from the side that beat Grimsby Town 4-0 at Blundell Park last weekend and was pleased with what he saw from Golden.
Alexander said: “He’s a great lad – he trains really hard and shows the right enthusiasm and attitude towards the game.
I think he’s got the basis of making a good career for himself… He got on the ball and broke forward when he could and there’s more to come from Tylor.”
With Alexander admitting that the Salford City squad needs adding to, he may have to continue turning to the club’s development squad for fresh blood but he is still planning to bring in players if he can.
“It’s difficult, we don’t have any budget left – we’re looking to wheel and deal and bring in a couple of loans if possible but we’ll see what the week brings,” the Ammies’ boss said.
One player who will not be being replaced any time soon is 35-year-old striker, Ian Henderson. He has shouldered a lot of his side’s scoring responsibility with five of Salford’s seven goals so far, but Alexander is hoping that the rest of the squad can add to the front man’s exploits.
Alexander added: “We never want to rely on one player scoring goals for the team. It’s about a team collective and effort and other people, we know, can score goals, so we just need to keep working hard on the training pitch and taking it into games.”
Salford City face Morecambe in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday night with a trip to Stevenage on Saturday for their next League Two fixture.
